My Journey: Annual day 3

Please read the previous part by clicking on the Story name My Journey: Annual day 2

After practicing how to walk, sit, and behave in a saree for two days, my teacher wanted me to embody the grace of a girl. It was challenging at first, but I gradually got used to wearing a saree and behaving like a girl in it. My teacher also made me wear a wig to get used to having long hair. This routine continued for a week. Meanwhile, my teacher trained other boys.

After a week, my teacher said, "You're ready to practice with the other boys." I felt scared and nervous about facing them and playing a female role. But my teacher reassured me, "You're completely ready. Just focus on performing."

Confident now, I went to the auditorium. My classmates were surprised and some giggled because I was in a saree and wig. Seeing this, my teacher warned them, "Anyone who teases will be suspended." Everyone agreed not to make fun of me.

During rehearsals, my teacher called me and said, "Now it's your turn to perform." I was shocked and said, "I'm not ready. I don't know what to do."

"You don't need to do much," my teacher replied. "Just focus on your expressions while the music and dialogues play in the background."

I started my scene with Bhima, but it went badly. My teacher said, "You're not showing the elegance of a woman. It looks like a boy pretending to be a girl." I felt sad and didn't know what to say.

My teacher called for a break and then asked me to perform the same scene in front of her. I did a bit better, but she said, "You're the son of a professional Yakshagana artist. You should be able to show even the smallest expressions."

Feeling ashamed, I told her, "I need two days to improve." Rehearsals continued without me, and we went home.

Later, my mother called me. She said, "Your father wants to meet you." I went to the hall, and he was sitting on the sofa. He called my mother and made me sit beside him. He said, "The school called saying you're not performing well. I understand it's difficult, so I want you to practice at home."

"It's my first time playing a female character," I explained.

"I know it's hard," he said. "For the next two days, your teacher has given you holidays. You'll wear a saree, wig, and jewelry at home and practice."

I was shocked but agreed. He told my mother, "From now on, he'll wear a saree at home and practice. You have to take care of this."

My mother was thrilled. She kissed my forehead and said, "I'll make sure you perform your best." She took me to her room and started searching for a saree. She found a red saree with a golden border and told me to get the long wig from the drama room. I fetched it, and she eagerly draped the saree and styled the wig into a long braid. Then, she started applying makeup, beginning with foundation on my face, followed by enhancing my eyes with kajal and eyeshadow, adding blush to my cheeks, and finishing with lipstick on my lips.

She finished and was delighted to see me. She took kajal from her eyes and put it on my chin, making me stand in front of the mirror. I was amazed at my reflection.

Our principal announced that there would be no more regular classes, and from now on, we would focus only on practice. Our teacher called our group and took us to the auditorium. She told us how the show would start, who would go first on stage, and how the others should enter afterward. We practiced hard until lunch. After lunch, the principal gathered everyone and informed us that the rehearsals would now take place on stage in the exact order as the annual day. This was to make sure everything would run smoothly. The whole school gathered in the auditorium. First, the primary school students performed, followed by the high school students. Our performance was scheduled last as we were in 10th grade. When it was our turn, the girls in our class went first. Then it was our turn. I felt a wave of ner

Sunday arrived, and since I had no plans, I let myself sleep in. When I finally got up, I took a bath and then went into my mother’s room, still wrapped in my towel. When my mom came in and saw me, she asked with a smile, "Why are you sitting here in your towel?" I replied, half-joking, "Where is my saree?" She laughed softly and said, "The annual day is over, and you don’t need to wear a saree anymore." Her words reminded me that the exciting event was really over. I went back to my room and changed into my regular t-shirt and shorts, but a part of me missed the feel of the saree. It had been so comfortable and felt special. After breakfast, my father had already gone to the studio to practice Yakshagana, leaving the house quiet. I spent most of th

My Journey: Annual day 1

In the following years, the opportunity to wear a saree didn't present itself again as my mother seemed to lose interest in those activities. When I was in the 10th standard, our school prepared for its annual day celebrations. Boys in our class were assigned to perform Yakshagana, a traditional art form, while the girls were to showcase Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form. With very few girls in our class, our teacher rushed into the classroom one day with exciting news—we would be performing a scene from the epic Mahabharata for the Yakshagana segment. Roles were quickly assigned based on height and suitability. The tallest boys were chosen to play the Pandavas, some took on roles as Kauravas, and there were only two of us left: my friend, who was taller than me, and myself, the shortest in the class. The on
